Harold A. Lowe Obituary

Harold Andrew Lowe, age 98, of Cincinnati, Iowa passed away Saturday, January 09, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, Iowa.

He was born in Brazil, Iowa on March 31, 1917, the fourth son of Edwin and Emma (Allison) Lowe. He went to school through the third grade in Brazil. At the age on nine his family moved to a two hundred sixty acre farm southwest of Cincinnati. Harold went through the eighth grade at the Carr country school in Franklin Township. He then went to high school in Cincinnati, graduating in 1936.

Harold taught at the Carr country school in 1936-37. The school had to close the following year because of not enough children to run the school. He then worked on top at his dad's coal mine weighing and selling coal. He taught next at Brush College country school in northwest Franklin Township.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army when World War II came along. Harold went into the service on September 22, 1942. He took his training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and Camp Polk, Louisiana. He sailed on the Queen Mary to Wales, in Great Britain, in the spring of 1943. On June 5, 1944, Harold went to the Port of Embarkation at South Hampton, England. He arrived at Omaha Beach in Normandy shortly after the beachhead had been taken by the Americans.

He served in the 60th Chemical Company and 1st Army during the war. Harold mainly handled mortar shells in the supply line during the Allies push through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and finally into Germany. He came home around October 18, 1945. He said his small part in helping defeat Hitler, and the Nazis, was his biggest accomplishment in life.

Harold went to meat cutting school in Toledo, Ohio on the GI Bill after he returned home. He then cut meat in Winterset, Iowa for about a year. He then returned home and went back to teaching.

He married Lorene Hudson on June 6, 1954 at his wife's parents' home.

Harold went to Centerville Community College, then Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri. He earned his BA in Elementary Education from Northeast.

He taught mostly fifth grade in Seymour, Exline, Belle Plaine and Albia, Iowa until 1972.

In 1975 he went to work as a janitor at the Appanoose County Law Center. He worked for Sheriff Montelle Morrow. Harold worked there until he retired in 1982.
During his retirement years he loved to take trips with his wife in his car, or bus tours, all over the United States. Harold loved going to Maryville, Missouri to see his grandchildren. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Cincinnati, and went to church regularly when he was in good health. He loved his fellow church members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorene; brothers, Claud, Floyd, Charles, and James Lowe; and a great nephew, John Steele.

Harold is survived by his sister, Grace Scott of Centerville, Iowa; sons, Neal of Cincinnati, Iowa, and Tim of Maryville, Missouri; grandchildren Jamison and Alyssa both of Maryville, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Kay Singley officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Lange Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 6-8 PM.
